Commensal Bacteria:

The Helpful Microbes That Support Your Oral Health

Not all bacteria are bad—in fact, some are essential. Commensal microbes are the “good guys” of the oral microbiome. They help protect your mouth by:

  • Blocking harmful bacteria from attaching to teeth and gums

  • Neutralising acids that contribute to tooth decay

  • Supporting immune function and microbial balance

Your Genoral report compares the levels of these beneficial species in your sample to what is typically found in a healthy oral environment.

What Your Results Mean

If some commensals are missing or lower than expected, it could indicate an imbalance in your oral ecosystem. While not all need to be present for your microbiome to function well, multiple deficiencies may signal a weakened protective barrier.

In your results, you'll see:

  • Which helpful species are present

  • Whether their levels fall within or outside the expected range

  • Where support or improvement may be needed
